Honor a Veteran with a FREE Rose this Memorial Day!

Memorial Day is a time to stop and remember all those that have served in our military, particularly those that lost their lives fighting for our county. Traditionally on Memorial Day, flowers and flags are placed on the gravestones of veterans across the country to honor their service.  This Memorial Day Blumz by JRDesigns wants to celebrate all of the people who have served in our military by giving a rose to every soldier and veteran that we can.

We will be giving out one FREE rose to anyone who would like to honor a soldier this Thursday, May 21st.  We would like to see these roses given to soldiers who are actively serving in the military, vets who previously served,  or placed on the gravestones of people who gave their life in service. To pick up your Memorial Day rose please stop into Blumz in Ferndale (503 E. Nine Mile Rd.) or Detroit (1260 Library Street) this Thursday during business hours. It is important to remember all the lives we have lost and all of the people who have fought to protect our freedoms.

The rose is the perfect flower to honor our soldiers as it was declared America's floral emblem in 1986. Traditionally, roses are a great way to show appreciation, honor, and to show remembrance. Many people even choose to order large displays of roses to place on the gravestones of fallen soldiers. We thought this would be a nice way to show our respect for those who serve.  Please visit us in Ferndale from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and in Detroit from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. this Thursday, we would be honored to help all of you honor someone who fought so honorably for this country!

The 7th Annual Ferndale Perennial Exchange Will Be Hosted at Blumz by JRDesigns in Ferndale this Saturday!

This Saturday Blumz by JRDesigns will be hosting a perennial exchange that is being put together by Ferndale’s Beautification Commission. This is the 7th year that the commission will be running the event so some of you already know the drill. But, for those newbies that want to come out and see what their digging up, here are all the details that you need to know.

The Perennial Exchange will take place this Saturday May 16th at Blumz by JRDesigns Ferndale location (503 E. Nine Mile Rd, Ferndale MI). The idea behind the exchange is simple, you bring one plant to the event and you take another one home.  All plants must be in some sort of container, no loose buds! The containers can be anywhere from four inches tall to gallon size. If you want to bring a bare rooted plant please wrap it in moist newspaper and put it inside a plastic bag. Please make sure to label your plants before you get to the event to avoid confusion. This is a great way to share something that you grew with another flower lover while getting something new and special for your own garden.

Check in and plant drop off will take place at 9 am. The exchange will officially take place from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. Blumz will also have plants available for purchase. This will be a fun way to kick of the planting season in style. So, head to the yard, dig up a few of the wonderful things that you have been growing and come out to the exchange this Saturday!

A Mother's Day Story: Four Generations Meet for the First Time

Pictured from left to right: Heather Mominee, Cecilia  Mominee, Cecilia Raska, Rochelle Silcox, Leo Silcox

Flowers have all kinds of different meanings to different people. They are given to celebrate joy, happiness, the arrival of a new baby, a birthday and even the loss of a loved one.   Flowers are the universal symbol of love and care.  But, for Jerome Raska and his family flowers are a lot more important and their roots go a little bit deeper.

Cecilia Kula married Leo Raska when she was only 17 years old.  Together they ran a large dairy farm with over 80 livestock.  They also had four children, two boys and two girls.  As soon as the kids were old enough, they helped maintain the farm.  As you can imagine, Cecilia was a very busy women but somehow she always made time to plant and maintain a large garden on their property. Attending to the garden became one of the children’s favorite pastimes, especially for her son Jerome.  Little did Cecilia know that while she was cultivating a beautiful garden she was also raising a future award winning florist.

Jerome learned gardening from his mother and turned his passion for flowers and plants into a career.  For over 30 years he has worked in the floral, event, and design industry and he has become a leader and educator in his field.  Jerome opened the Detroit location of Blumz by JRDesigns with co-owner Robbin Yelverton over 14 years ago. Since then they have opened another shop in Ferndale, Michigan and a private appointment only showroom in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  The business has grown throughout the years and so has the family.
Jerome now has four children of his own, Christina, Rochelle, Heather and Zachary. All  four of his children have worked in the floral industry throughout the years.  In fact, Rochelle and Zachary are still integral part of the Blumz team.

Both Heather and Rochelle recently had children and decided to pay homage to the couple that started it all, their grandparents Leo and Cecilia Raska. They named their latest additions after their great grandparents and set up a time for great grandma Cecilia to meet her namesakes.  Cecilia has 14 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren but this meeting was extra special to her.  She said it meant a lot to know that her name would be carried on and when she held Leo for the first time she said “ I never thought I would get to hold Leo again” ( sadly her husband Leo passed away over 30 years ago).  It was a touching and heartfelt moment for four generations to gather together to celebrate love, life, and of course flowers.

Cecilia is proud of her family and proud of the fact that even at 93 years old she is still able to attend to her garden.  She currently grows lots of tomatoes and some of her favorite flowers including tulips and begonia's.  She said that even when her garden isn't growing outside her son Jerome keeps her house full of fresh blooms. In fact, she said that this Easter he brought over the biggest Easter Lily she has ever seen.

During this special visit Jerome snapped a picture of three generations of their family together (four if you count him taking the picture).  It is a beautiful picture and a beautiful story that we had to share in honor of Mother’s Day.  Flowers are much more than a special gift to make mom smile, growing flowers together can become a family tradition for generations to enjoy! For more information about flowers, mother day gift giving, and gardening visit Blumz.com. We have a new blog up on the website that has lots of tips and tricks!  We are also open extended hours this week in honor of Mother's Day, we want to make sure that Mother;s Day is just as special for your family as it is for ours!

Blumz by JRDesigns Mothers Day Gift Guide

Mother's Day is just around the corner, this year we will celebrate on May 10th, 2015. Many of us will visit our mothers with gifts or send something special to let her know we care, even if we cannot be there. Blumz by JRDesigns receives orders and delivers flowers and gifts to mothers all around the world. We create beautiful one of a kind bouquets that would make any mom smile, but wouldn't it be fun to do something extra special this year?  Here are a few ideas on how to make this holiday one to remember!

1- Add gardening tools and seeds to her bouquet-
How about incorporating some new gardening tools into the floral display that you give/send to her. A gardening hoe, new gloves, and some fresh seeds can be added to the bouquet. After the holiday she can plant the seeds with her new tools and have flowers to enjoy all summer round (multiple summers if you buy perennial seeds). Order display below here.

2- Give her a indoor garden that anyone can easily take care of-
Succulents, air plants and terrariums are a really great way to have some greens indoors without having to do a lot of maintenance.  These plants only need water when they are dry (think once a month or when the soil is dry to the touch) and lots of light. You can put a box on a windowsill and watch it grow with very little upkeep.  We have a lot of options including glass containers, hanging containers, picture frames,  and more! Stop into the Ferndale or Detroit locations to pick up the gifts seen below!
3-Have flowers/ plants put into a "vase" that represents her.
Is your mom a tea drinker? Does she like to collect tea pots? Maybe shes a coffee drinker and would appreciate a floral design made inside of a large coffee mug. We can create a one of a kind design inside of whatever you would like. Maybe you want to purchase a vase and have the grand kids decorate it before you have flowers and plants added to it. Stop into your local florist and talk to them about creating a one of a kind arrangement inside something that is special to her. Stop into Blumz Ferndale or Detroit to pick up these items!

5- Send a plant!
Flowers are beautiful but no matter how fresh they are or how well you take care of them, they will eventually expire.  Plants on the other hand are the gift that keeps on giving, if you take care of them properly! Check out this guide to plant maintenance and pick her up something green for Mother's Day! You can order the plant pictured below for pickup or delivery here.

6- Send a basket full of local goodies.
We find it hard to believe, but some moms aren't the bouquet of flowers type. If your mom is one of those people we have the perfect solution for you.  How about sending her a Detroit style gift basket.  These gift baskets feature a tasty selection of Detroit items including Better Maid, Rocky's, Kars, Faygo, Sanders, GardenFresh, and more.  It also features Detroit memorabilia like a coffee mug, playing cards, and post cards.  This is a really great idea for someone outside of Michigan who might be a little homesick! You can order this basket online here.

7- Send it in a purse or bag!
A large tote, cute beach bag, or a little clutch can be the perfect way to wrap and carry a plant or large floral display over to mom. The bag is a bonus gift that she can enjoy for months to come! You can order this lovely arrangement here

No matter what you do, don't forget to get something special for the person who brought you into this world.  These are just a few ideas, feel free to come on by the store or visit Blumz.com to get more inspiration for this years Mother's Day gift! She took care of you, it;s time to take care of her!
