New Years Eve, Old Rituals & New Beginnings!

Celebrations are used to mark significant dates and occasions and New Year’s Eve is certainly no new face to the party! In fact, the celebration of Winter Solstice and the beginning of the New Year is one of the oldest celebrations. For most westerners, that day of celebration has evolved and moved from the original dates of December 21st/22nd to the beginning of the Gregorian calendar, January 1st. Other cultures celebrate the New Year on various dates throughout the year. However, even with all the diversity there are some underlying themes across all cultures. The New Year is seen as a time to set things straight, wash the slate clean and reflect. It is a time to say out with the old and in with the new!

In recognition of the many symbols and rituals used to usher in the New Year, this arrangement has
been carefully and thoughtfully created.  A golden rectangular container serves as the base of the design to represent the prosperity of the New Year. Evergreen foliage is used to symbolize everlasting life and to ward off evil.  It also creates a lush bed for the arrangement. Candles are used by many cultures to symbolize life and drive away darkness. The smoke from the candle also represents thoughts and prayers in many cultures.  A garland of cranberries twined with red string or yarn is usually used by The American Indians as a symbol of peace. The berry is also used for its healing properties.  The beautiful deep red of the cranberries is further enhanced by the use of a fresh pomegranate which has been opened to show its seeds. The pomegranate is a powerful symbol of prosperity, it also represents knowledge, learning and wisdom in many cultures.   In Greek mythology, the seeds of the pomegranate are present in some of the stories about the changing of the seasons from winter to spring. A cluster of grapes is placed in the arrangement to represent the Spanish practice of placing 12 grapes in a glass of wine or champagne to toast your guests at midnight. As the wine is drunk the grapes are eaten one at a time, each representing a month of the New Year, a wish is made for each grape as it is eaten. White roses, a symbol of purity and honesty lend their elegance to the display. Stems of wheat are added as they are a symbol of love and charity as well as to guard against conceit. A flourish of ivy to the right invokes the Celtic symbolism of connections and friendships. Ever intertwining, the ivy is an example of the twists and turns our friendships take but also a testimony to the long-lasting connections and bonds we form with our friends that last over the years. Holly is believed to bring good luck and ward off evil. It also symbolizes reincarnation and rebirth. The springs of rosemary are used to symbolize connection and remembrance. Over-sized glittery butterfly wings create drama and hearken back the symbolism of rebirth and change which is also associated with butterflies. Tucked within the center of the design is a very ancient and mysterious symbol found in architecture, art, and sculpture from the early days of civilization; a pine cone. It has long been associated with the Third Eye, the Mind’s Eye or the Eye of Reason. The pine cone is a fitting symbol for reviewing the past and looking into the future.

Finally, masks have been used over the centuries for many purposes,  in many cultures the mask is a symbol of the things that occurred over the last year that you want to hide. At midnight the mask comes off and a  “New Year’s kiss”  is exchanged. The kiss is a mark of purification and the removal of the bad. So, with the beginning of 2016, take this time to start some awesome personal rituals to celebrate life’s continuance and renewal. Celebrate by gathering with friends and family, share a moment to reflect, enjoy a meal, take off your masks, open your mind’s eye and welcome the New Year with a positive outlook.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

"Life is too short to wear boring jewelry"- Anonymous

Have you ever heard anyone say "I have too much jewelry"?  Yeah, we haven't either.  Everyone loves a little something special to accent their outfit.  Some people prefer gold, some silver and some go for something a little more unique.  Floral jewelry is one of the biggest up and coming trends, whether you are going out for the night or attending a special event, floral jewelry is one way to guarantee that no one else will be wearing the same thing!

This up and coming trend was popularized by Wendy Andrade, a jewelry and floral designer that published a book called Fresh Floral Jewelry.   Wendy travels around to different places to teach her the art of floral jewelry design to other creative florists.  She recently sat down with the  the Blumz by JRDesigns design team and taught us more about floral jewelry making.  We created a few fun designs with her and learned more about this trend.  We are really looking forward to creating some unique wearable pieces for our clients when they attend parties, events, and weddings.  We wanted to show you some of the amazing things that we can create with a few fresh Blumz. This is an extra special way to add a pop of color to your outfit!

Check out some of the different things that we can do, and call us (248-398-5130/ 313-964-5777) to order something special for your next event.

To help our guests figure out where to eat and what to do while they are visiting Blumz by JRDesigns has put together a short list of some of the best things Detroit has to offer.

Don't forget, if you have any last minute event or floral needs, Blumz by JRDesigns has a store conveniently located in downtown Detroit to help you out. We even rent tuxedos if you get invited to  a big event that you weren't planning on attending before you left!  Welcome to Detroit, please enjoy your stay!

Here is a list of great restaurants that you might want to check out while your in town:

Slows BBQ- Slows is known for it's BBQ and they offer a variety of unique sauces to dress up your meal. They are also known for their mac and cheese, which is a must try if you visit.  Slows has two locations, a full service restaurant at 2138 Michigan Ave. and a to-go carryout location at 4107 Cass Ave.  The food is so good that there is usually a wait when you get there.  We suggest eating a snack before you go and grabbing a drink while you wait for the table, we promise it is worth it!

Roast- This restaurant features a menu that was created by world renown chef Michael Symon. They are known for the Roast burger but we have never been disappointed with anything we have ordered. The fist was dedicated to the city of Detroit in 1986. "It represents the power of his (Joe Louis) punch both inside and outside the ring. Because of his efforts to fight Jim Crow laws, the fist was symbolically aimed toward racial injustice". Both are staples of downtown and worth a visit.

Your New Favorite Plant: The Braided Ficus

The best part about summer is being around all the green things that grow outside.  It's  beautiful to watch the trees, bushes, plants and flowers come alive every spring and it is heart breaking to watch them all lost their leaves every fall. The best way to get through the change of season is to make sure that you have something green and leafy inside to cheer you up!

One of our favorite house plants is the weeping fig aka the braided ficus.  This is a low-maintenance plant that is popular for use indoors. The  trunks of a weeping fig are braided while they are young and pliable and as the tree grows  the braided trunks grow together into a permanent braid.  These plants only need to be watered every five to seven days. The best way to tell if they are thirsty is to stick your fingers into the dirt and only water when the soil is dry to the touch

Blumz by JRDesigns carries a variety for four to five foot tall braided ficus plants. They
sell for $69.99 each( including the pot).  These plants are also a great gift! Stop in and see us in Ferndale or Detroit and pick one up for your home!

Blumz: Make Someone Smile

A smile is such a simple gesture, but sometimes a smile can turn your whole day around. In fact, it was Mother Theresa who said “We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do”. It’s true you never really know what sharing a smile will do, which is why we sought out to deliver a lot of smiles around Ferndale and Detroit this past Monday. Blumz by JRDesigns participated in Teleflora’s annual Make Someone Smile campaign and walked away getting more from the smiles that we got then the ones that we gave!

Every year Teleflora asks florists across the U.S. to join in and hand out their signature Be Happy® Bouquets to those who need smiles – such as hospital patients, senior citizens living in nursing homes and assisted living homes, and recipients of Meals-on-Wheels programs. The Be Happy Muggs are donated by the company and each florists reaches out to distributors within their community to get plants and flowers donated to fill the mugs with before we head out into the community to hand them out. This year Blumz by JRDesigns participated by filling 48 mugs with plants that were donated by Tropical Distributors. We visited Ferndale’s own Hilton Nursing Home and gave smiles to the residence. They were overjoyed to welcome us into their facility and loved receiving a plant. A lot of the women talked about being former gardeners and told us it meant a lot to get a plant to take care of and enjoy. We were smiling so big when we left that you would think that we were the ones getting the gift.

After sharing some smiles in Ferndale we headed to The Mariners Inn in Detroit to share some more smiles with the staff and residents. Mariners Inn is a in house treatment program that uses art to help people recover from alcohol addiction. They have 90 residents in their program at all times and they work really hard to help get them back on their feet. We shared smiles with the staff and with the residents of the facility. Everyone was excited to get the mugs with the plants inside. We were blown away by the positive response and the great work that Mariners Inn does for the city of Detroit, we were delighted that they let us in to share some smiles and joy with everyone there.

Give a smile week runs through this Saturday, July 25th. We wanted to share this story to encourage everyone to share a smile with someone this week. Life can be rough but it's a lot easier when we show each other a little support, a litte understanding, and give each other a big smile to help all of us get through the day. If you would like to send a Be Happy Bouquet display to someone who might be feeling down you can purchase one here. Smile, life is wonderful!

FREE Parking in Ferndale Every Monday this Summer

Ferndale is the coolest place to live outside of the city of Detroit,  Blumz is lucky to have locations in both cities.  Our Ferndale location is just a few blocks outside the heart of downtown Ferndale, it is walking distance from all the shops and restaurants that make the city so great.

We are lucky enough to have our own large parking lot, so when you visit us you can be assured that you will always find a place to park for free, but we cannot say the same for all the businesses in the area. A lot of the spaces in Ferndale are surronded by parking meters that charge you to park and visit.  But, this summer the city is inviting you to come and visit for free.

Ferndale is celebrating "The Dog Days of Summer" by offering free parking in all city lots every Monday through Labor Day.  Mondays are the perfect day to come down and have lunch or dinner at one of the city's great restaurants. We suggest some BBQ from Zeke's, some pizza from the W.A.B. or something delicious from M-Brew.  These are just a few of the great places that you can check out while you are in town.

Before you head home, we suggest that you stop by Blumz and see our store for yourself.  We will have lots of fresh from the Garden Blumz in stock and on special throughout the summer along with lots of new gifts and candies to treat yourself or give to someone special. Parking can no longer be the reason you cannot come to Ferndale this summer.  Come down and see all the great things that this city has to offer for yourself!

Rainbow Roses Are Back!

Last Friday The Supreme Court of The United States of America ruled that all people whom wish to marry will be able to do so in all fifty states, even if the person they wish to marry shares the same gender as themselves.  This was huge news and a lot of our customers came into the store to purchase flowers and gifts for loved ones to celebrate. In fact, we had one customer come in and buy a huge bouquet to propose to her partner of the last 20 years.
(Our lovely customer getting ready to propose, BTW she said yes!)

We are delighted to see so many people celebrating their love.  In honor of that we made a special order and got a fresh shipment of Rainbow Roses in stock today!  We will only have them in stock for a limited time so make sure to call or stop in ASAP!  These beautiful stems are 4.99 a stem, $49.99 a dozen , and $59.99 for a dozen vased.

We look forward to planning a lot more weddings this coming year. Remember Blumz is a one stop wedding shop that handles everything from tuxedo rental, invitations, tenting, lighting, officiant services, and of course the flowers!  We love everything about weddings, so the idea of more weddings is the best news we have ever heard!  Wedding season is truly here!
